There are numerous apps available to help students do better in school. One type of app is the gamified study timer, where you set up a timer and earn rewards for your time spent focused. These apps are motivational, fun, and very helpful for the student who may have trouble focusing, or simply getting started. Today we will be reviewing two promising study timers in the Google Play store and compare them head-to-head to recommend which one we think is the best app for students in this category!
- App #1: Forest – Stay Focused
Released in August 2014, this app has 5M+ downloads and a 4.4 rating as of June 2019. It also won Editor’s Choice for best productivity app.
- App #2: Study Bunny: Focus Timer
Released in March 2019, this relatively newer app has 5K+ downloads and a 4.8 rating as of June 2019.
FOREST
What do we like about Forest?
- Sleek UI
- Keeps you from using other apps on your phone by killing the tree that you are growing
- Many different types of bushes and trees to choose from, plus ambient sounds you can unlock
- FREE features: basic statistics page
- Option to take a timed break after study session
- Premium users can donate some of your coins to plant a real tree
- Available for Android and iOS (paid)
What do we not like about Forest?
- No option to pause, you can only “Give Up”
- You have to pay for the “whitelist” option, to prevent your tree from dying due to use of necessary apps
- You must pay for the following features: Tags, Friends, Achievements, Real Forest
- Store prices are constant (500 each)
- Forced ads
STUDY BUNNY
What do we like about Study Bunny?
- Cute UI
- You can pause mid-session to take a break if necessary, though you may be penalized if your break is too long
- While you are paused, you can read some motivational advice to help you keep going
- Many items: Bunny cosmetics, accessories, food, pets, wide variety of music genres, all priced variably
- FREE features: customizable statistics, To Do list
- No forced ads
- No premium or locked features
What do we not like about Study Bunny?
- Does not block you from using your phone
- No option to take a timed, non-penalized break
- Only available on Android
And the winner is… STUDY BUNNY!
While both apps are fantastic study timers for students, Study Bunny came out on top as the clear winner for quite a few reasons. It’s no surprise it boasts glowing reviews!
We recommend Study Bunny: Focus Timer because:
#1: the app is completely free. There are no premium or locked features, and the app has quite a lot of free features which are complementary to studying. We think these are useful tools and we are glad to see that students have access to them.
#2: no annoying ads. We get that ads keep an app going. But we’re glad that Study Bunny doesn’t shove them in our faces! You can elect to watch ads if you wish to attain more coins. Sounds like a fair deal!
#3: Fun and cute! Choosing which item to unlock next is exciting and simply motivating with the Study Bunny app. Plus the art is just adorable and we love it!
